Large animal rescue creates a dangerous emergency situation which is often misunderstood and mishandled by emergency personnel due to a simple lack of knowledge and understanding. Emergency response organizations are well-trained to respond to any emergency involving people but few if any have the formal training, identified procedures, or specialized equipment required to rescue livestock or other large animals at risk in these same situations.
Signet North America will of course provide the vast majority of equipment for this session. However, to the extent possible, this session will also utilize each customer’s specific equipment to the greatest extent possible, including animals, PPE, etc. for training, as we feel that it is important to train on the equipment one has in order to discover and understand uses, identify strengths and shortcomings, and address each of these in order to do everything possible to ensure a stronger, more competent organization at the conclusion of the educational experience.
The goal of this course is to educate first responders on the PETS Act (Oct 6, 2006), the Federal Law that exists requiring rescue, medical care, shelter and essential needs for animals involved in disasters. In addition, the United States National Response Framework outlines five ESFs (Emergency Support Function) that involve animals. These ESFs are explained in detail so that all expectations are clear.
During this 8-hour course, topics covered will include but not be limited to:
- Challenges first responders face when called to respond to an incident involving large animals (e.g. horses, cattle, etc).
- Behavior of large animals
- Handling large animals
- Safety precautions used around large animals
- 5 major technical large animal rescue techniques utilized in most large animal rescues.
Hands on training will give first responders experience working with live animals and the actual equipment used in these rescues.
A working knowledge of the Incident Command System is beneficial.
