Summary Description

Many organizations such as utility providers, transportation personnel, law enforcement, etc., have the potential to find themselves in dangerous situations involving wildfires.  Signet’s Wildland Fire Safety for Non-Firefighting Personnel course is specifically designed to bring participants to an understanding of the inherent hazards found in wildland fire situations and safety measures that can be taken.This fully customizable 8-hour course introduces students to characteristics and interactions of the wildland fire environment (fuels, weather, and topography) that affect wildland fire behavior for safety purposes as well as safety measures to be taken.  The materials in this course are based on elements of the National Wildfire Coordiating Group wildland fire behavior curriculum.  Customization fully alows for more extensive coverage of any subject matter area, depending on the previous experience and specific requirements of each individual.Signet North America utilizes each customer’s specific equipment to the greatest extent possible for training, as we feel that it is important to train on the equipment one has in order to discover and understand uses, identify strengths and shortcomings, and address each of these in order to do everything possible to ensure a stronger, more competent organization at the conclusion of the educational experience.

Goals

The intent of this course is NOT to train your personnel to be wildland firefighters; rather, the goal of this course is to bring personnel an understanding of the behavior and inherent dangers a wildfire situation presents and actions to take to protect yourself accordingly.  To this end, participants will acquire the skills necessary to:

  • DESCRIBE HOW TO INCORPORATE AND MAINTAIN OPEN LINES OF COMMUNICATION WITH ALL APPROPRIATE FIRE SUPPRESSION PERSONNEL.
  • DEMONSTRATE THE ABILITY TO MAKE INFORMED DECISIONS.
  • APPLY LCES (LOOK-OUTS, COMMUNICATION, ESCAPE ROUTES, AND SAFETY ZONES) TO FIRELINE ACTIVITIES.
  • UNDERSTAND AND RECOGNIZE THE FACTORS THAT CONTRIBUTE TO BASIC FIRE BEHAVIOR.
  • ESTABLISH A CULTURE OF SAFETY FOR WILDLAND FIRE SITUATIONS
  • IDENTIFY AND MITIGATE SAFETY RISKS
  • UNDERSTAND THE DYNAMICS OF WILDLAND FIRES (OVERVIEW)
  • PERFORM RISK ASSESSMENT
  • UNDERSTAND BASIC INCIDENT COMMAND STRUCTURE
  • SPEAK THE “LANGUAGE OF THE AGENCIES”
