Customized for the Southwest Region of Colorado, Signet North America’s flagship NFPA 470 Hazardous Materials/WMD Technician course equips participants with the essential skills needed to respond safely and effectively to hazardous materials and WMD incidents.  These skills include hazard identification, determining protective actions, and utilizing specialized protective gear and equipment to mitigate a wide variety of hazmat incidents.

Course objectives

Signet North America’s NFPA 470 Hazardous Materials Technician course equips participants to meet the standards outlined in Chapters 10 and 11 of the 2022 NFPA 470 standard for Hazardous Materials Technicians.

Course Content

This is a very intensive, hands-on 80-hour Hazardous Materials Technician program focused on essential competencies for managing hazardous materials incidents.  Topics shall include but are not limited to:

    • Chemical and Physical Properties: Understanding how hazardous materials react under various conditions.
    • Information Sources: Understanding and utilizing various published and electronic hazard and response information sources.
    • Chemical Detection, Monitoring, and Sampling: Techniques for detecting and measuring airborne contaminants.
    • PPE Selection: Proper selection and use of personal protective equipment based on hazard analysis.
    • Decontamination Techniques: Effective methods for reducing or eliminating contamination.
    • Spill and Leak Control: Approaches for containing and mitigating spills or leaks.
    • Container Identification and Handling: Knowledge of different container types and their risks.
    • Incident Command: Applying the Incident Command System (ICS) to hazardous materials emergencies.

Recommended Audience

Previous training to the Hazardous Materials Operations level is required to pursue certification at the Hazardous Materials Technician level. Upon course completion, the attendee will receive a Certificate of Completion from Signet North America.
