Signet North America’s 40-hour Highway Emergency Response Specialist course (as well as our 8 and 16 hour Highway Refresher course) is designed to prepare emergency responders to deal with hazardous materials incidents specifically related to highway transportation. This includes chemical cargo tanks and dry vans. Topics include container features, valves, venting systems, basic repairs, drilling and transfer techniques, and grounding and bonding, incorporated into an extensive hands-on-experience.
The goal of this Signet North America Chemistry You’ll Actually Use Experience is to ensure that personnel will better understand the chemical terminology required of them by NFPA 472. This Experience is one very full day of interactive hands-on chemical demonstrations, explorations, explanations and real-world applications for responders at all levels. This course meets and exceeds criteria found in United States OSHA 29 CFR 1910.120(q)(6)(i)(A), 1910.120(q)(6)(ii)(C), 1910.120(q)(6)(iii)(I), and 1910.120(q)(6)(iv)(I). It also meets criteria found in 2008 NFPA 472 Chapters 5 Core Competencies for Operations Level Responders [5.2.2 (8), 5.2.3 (8), 5.2.3 (9)], Chapter 6 Mission-Specific Competencies for Operations Level Responders [6.3.3.2 (2), and Chapter 8 Competencies for Hazardous Material Technicians [8.2.2.2, 8.2.2.3].
Highway transportation incidents involving hazardous materials (hazmat) present unique challenges for emergency responders. Unlike stationary hazmat spills, highway incidents occur in unpredictable environments, often requiring quick decisions under high-pressure conditions.
This course is essential for firefighters, law enforcement, emergency medical personnel, hazmat teams, and transportation safety professionals who may encounter:
Tanker rollovers and fuel spills
Chemical fires in transit
Toxic gas releases from highway accidents
Multi-vehicle crashes involving hazardous cargo
By completing this training, participants will develop the expertise to assess risks, implement safety procedures, and execute effective mitigation strategies.
