Signet North America’s NFPA 470 Hazardous Materials/WMD Incident Commander course provides Incident Commanders with the knowledge and skills to manage hazardous materials and WMD incidents effectively. It covers key areas such as incident assessment, risk-based decision-making, strategic planning, and more, all within the Incident Command System (ICS) framework.
Course Objectives:
This course equips participants with the skills to manage hazmat and WMD incidents as outlined in Chapter 12 of the 2022 NFPA 470 standard for Hazardous Materials/WMD Incident Commanders. Participants will learn the skills to assess hazmat and WMD incidents, develop strategic response plans, and manage resources efficiently. Additionally, participants will learn to implement the Incident Command System (ICS), coordinate multi-agency efforts, ensure compliance with regulations, and conduct post-incident evaluations for improved future responses.
Course Content
Participants will be trained to effectively identify potential hazards, assess risks, and implement safety controls to protect both responders and the public. The course covers a broad range of topics, including but not limited to:
- Understanding the roles and responsibilities of an Incident Commander in hazmat and WMD incidents.
- Conducting incident size-up and risk assessments to guide decision-making.
- Applying the Incident Command System (ICS) in managing hazmat/WMD responses.
- Developing strategies for containment, decontamination, and public safety.
- Coordinating multi-agency operations effectively.
- Ensuring compliance with legal and regulatory standards.
- Conducting post-incident evaluations to improve future responses.
Recommended Audience:
This course is designed for fire officers, emergency response leaders, law enforcement commanders, emergency medical services (EMS) personnel, and other first responders who may assume an Incident Commander role during hazardous materials or WMD incidents. Participants should have a background in hazardous materials response operations and a working knowledge of the Incident Command System. Prior completion of NFPA 470 Operations-Level Competencies is recommended and required to serve in this capacity per NFPA 470. Upon course completion, the attendee will receive a Certificate of Completion from Signet North America.
